Madlen Hirtentreu’s work Inn of the Accord at hotel Viru (Original Sokos Hotel Viru) is part of the main exhibition of the contemporary art biennial Tallinn Photomonth Intensive Places at the Contemporary Art Museum of Estonia (EKKM). The exhibition is curated by The Creative Association of Curators TOK / Anna Bitkina, Maria Veits.

The work can be visited Sat–Sun from 15:00 to 19:00 in the period from 4.09 to 17.10.2021. It is a site-specific installation based on one-on-one visits. Please wait in the lobby next to a music box set on the table, a guide will come to you as soon as possible.



It is playing on its own in the hotel room. The imbalanced chord which does not belong. It is haunted. And I can not place it. It sings of some-thing inescapable. Its cinematic experience is supposed to wake up proto nostalgia.

It does it automatically, with the help of a Signal and You and the Local. It is in general accompanied by a Local.
She remembers the sound, the effect and the manipulation. Its hidden message, which fucked the brain.

She is waiting for You in the lobby. Sitting on a couch. I will not tell You more. You will recognize Her. And She will recognize You. I promise.

She might be thinking of the history the place carried in the past.
You know, KGB, radio, three different worlds within one roof.

Madlen Hirtentreu’s (1993) works focus on mental and physical territorial limits. To escape these limits and manipulate the situation, the artist relies on temporal shifts. She is highly interested in the lost futures. Her kinetic sculptures, installations and performances are often characterised by a Frankenstein-like combination of technology and body horror, where the abject and the mechanical system function as a unified tandem. The absurd and eclectic choice of material also serves as a document and carrier of emotions.
